The new E-GNSS Accelerator, funded by the European Commission’s DG Grow, is the first European Accelerator programme for Galileo running from 2017 until 2019. This programme accompanies entrepreneurs and startups all along the value chain to implement the EU space strategy. It is composed of a customised co-financing scheme for up to 90 regional prizes of the European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) and nine additional incubations. Thus, it supports the ESNC winners and finalists through an increased prize pool and access to more than 40 incubation centres of the ESNC network all across Europe.

At the E-GNSS Accelerator Bootcamp, the top 10 ranked ESNC 2017 winners will pitch in front of a high-ranking expert panel. They will showcase their business ideas and demonstrate how the incubation services would enable them to move beyond idea conception and start true commercial ventures. The top three pitching startups will get access to dedicated incubation programmes at their preferred incubation centre and will be announced at the Awards Ceremony the same day. These three incubations are valued EUR 62,000. Together with the Copernicus Accelerator, this initiative implemented by AZO, complements the overall approach in covering the whole value chain from innovation scouting to market entry. Location: Tallinn Science Park Tehnopol, Startup Incubator (Mäealuse 2/1)

The Estonian highlight of the European Space Week will be the opening of the ESA BIC Estonia, the first incubator of the European Space Agency in the Baltics. The Director General of ESA, Mr Johann-Dietrich Wörner, and the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Information Technology of Estonia, Ms Urve Palo will officially open the two incubators in Tallinn Science Park Tehnopol and Tartu Science Park. ESA BIC Estonia will be incubating at least 4 space related start-ups per year.

Estonia has long traditions in space science, stemming from 200 years old observatory of University of Tartu. Estonian research institutions and industrial enterprises have experience in creating space technologies and equipment since 1960s. Estonian startup scene today is growing very rapidly and is no longer about only Skype whose software was created by 3 Estonian engineers. It is also about Transferwise, Pipedrive, PlanetOS, Skeleton Technologies, Taxify and many others.

Estonia has gathered its best competences – eight dedicated ESA BIC project partners to work and to put their country on the world map by innovative use of space technologies and launching new space technology start-ups from Estonia.

Business Roundtable :: Space programmes fostering European Integration

2017 marks a significant year for both the European Union and Europe’s flagship space programmes – Galileo, EGNOS and Copernicus. For 60 years, European nations have been working together towards a common goal: a peaceful, united and prosperous Europe. By strengthening cooperation and integration in various fields – but above all in space – and by using cutting-edge technology, the European nations are constantly moving forward towards a digital single market. Despite current tendencies that are threatening to pull Europe apart, they have created something that no single nation could have achieved on its own. The European space programmes strengthen international partnerships and global security, thus boosting knowledge-based growth and competitiveness all across Europe. Prominent panellists from the realms of politics, research, and industry will discuss how space policy can further contribute to a safe and secure Europe for the benefit of consumers, producers and businesses. Explore how free movement of data and new funding opportunities can help exploit the benefits of technological progress.
